Merry Blogging :)

The Power of One
The Power of One was a very touching film. It made me feel sad and disgusted at racial problems people have. It made me forlorn that everyone P.K. loved died. When his mother died I felt sad because he had nowhere to go. I was disgusted when they showed the guard making Geel Piet eats human waste and when they beat him. I learned about the apartheid laws of South Africa and the effect it had on the Africans. I also learned what people thought in other countries about World War II. It was difficult for me to see P.K. get bullied at his boarding school. It was also very complicated for me to see the innocent Africans get beat. I cannot imagine how people could beat someone to death without feeling pain or guilt.
It was inspiring to see the Geel Piet train P.K. because it showed how P.K. fought throw all the pain to become a better boxer. It was also inspiring to see the owner of gym to stick up for the Africans that trained at his gym. This film was probably the most touching film I have seen in Global Ed. Hotel Rwanda was a touching movie, but the Power of One had a better story to it than Hotel Rwanda. Both of the movies showed more slaughter than I can handle. I am not a huge fan of blood and killing. Compared to the other movies I have watched this year, the Power of One was my favorite

Traditions
The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday is the most important tine of the year for my family. For Thanksgiving, we have one big party that includes the Rouen’s (my mom side of the family) and the Bowen’s (my aunts side of her family). We all get together at my Aunt Annie’s house and eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, carrots, rolls, and my favorite orange marshmallow jello. For dessert it is a tradition that we have my grandma’s homemade apple pie. After Thanksgiving, we always put up our Christmas tree. Every year I get really excited to put my favorite ornament up. It is a clear ball with gold and red beads hanging all down.
On Christmas Eve we have our traditional Christmas Eve party with the Rouen’s to eat a delectable dinner and exchange gifts. It is always a tradition that we drink St. Julian sparkling white grape juice with our dinner of smoked, honey-baked ham, strawberry banana jello, rolls, mashed potatoes, and corn. My mom always makes delicious Sanders hot fudge cream puffs for dessert. When we open presents every year, it is tradition that we open them in age order. Christmas Day, my dad, mom, brother, and I always go see a movie at AMC 20. We also sometimes have my grandma and Aunt Pat come over for leftovers and maybe a few extra presents. The day after Christmas it is my favorite tradition that all my friends and I go shopping for sales at our favorite stores. Many families have holiday traditions that make the holiday special in its own way.

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!
New Years is still a big holiday to me, though to some it might not be. When I was little, I always used to think it was really cool to stay up until midnight with my family and watch the gleaming ball drop in Times Square. This year, I celebrated the New Year’s with my friends. My group of friends got invited to our friend Bryan’s house for a New Years Eve party. We played ping pong and pool, and watched movies all night. When it was five minutes away until the new year, we turned on Dick Clark’s New Year show in Times Square and anxiously waited for the countdown. My friend Aidan was super excited and screamed count down until it reached one. We all went around giving New Year hugs to each other. After Bryan’s party the girls all went to Aidan’s house to sleepover.
Many things happened to me in the past year, both good and bad. I went to Chicago in 2009 for the first time ever, I made Stevenson cheer, and graduated middle school to move onto high school. I’m happy to leave my old school, St. Mikes, behind. I still had fun there but I enjoy high school much better. I am most looking forward to summer 2010. Summer is my favorite season of all. There’s no school and it’s always warm and mostly sunny. I am also looking forward to Coming Home and my birthday in March. I am even looking forward to the start of my sophomore year! “Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right -Oprah Winfrey.”
